We are currently seeking to fill two unique positions. First, we are excited to add an enthusiastic and detail oriented Part-time Retail person to our team.
Happy Holidays! Just a short note from us, wishing you the very best this holiday season and a very happy New Year.

Our hours over the next little while are:

December 25th + 26th: Closed

December 27th, 28th, 29th + 30th: Noon – 5:00pm

December 31st, January 1st + 2nd: Closed

We’ll be back on track on January 3rd with new fabric and lots of exciting things planned for 2012.

In case you missed it, the super amazing Janis from Pinecone Camp created the above Cracker DIY for another super amazing Vancouverite, Jan at Poppytalk. The fabric is from Spool of Thread and Janis picked some great ones. I love her idea of making napkins and using them to wrap the crackers! You can find the full DIY instructions on Poppytalk.

We wanted to make these for our Christmas celebration but we ran out of time. Instead, I think they will be perfect for New Years Eve!

It’s becoming a tradition to have our Spool of Thread Do-It-Yourself table at Got Craft?. We couldn’t be happier to be back again on Sunday, December 4th for the latest edition of this awesome craft show.

If you haven’t stopped by our table at past events, perhaps to make a Pinwheel Pin or our Prized Ribbon Pin, then be sure to mark the date and come visit us next week. You are in for a treat this year with our darling Bow Pin.

Spool of Thread’s free DIY table has all the supplies + tools needed to make a Bow Pin. Familiar faces from our shop will also be at the event with instruction sheets to help you out if you are stuck creating your Bow Pin.

We even bring pins so that you can place your bow on your sweater or jacket as soon as it finished! The best part of the day is watching everyone match their favourite printed cotton to felt, each colour combination tested with each person coming up with their own spin on the project.

The Bow would also be darling turned into a holiday ornament or tied to a special package, or as Andrea from Got Craft? suggested, add a bobby pin and turn the bow into a holiday hair fascinator.

After stopping by and seeing us up on the stage, be sure to visit all of our crafty friends at the show. Got Craft? hosts over 50 vendors and great for rounding out your holiday shopping list with gifts you are not making myself.

This coming Thursday, Spool of Thread is honoured to be hosting the official book launch of Hoopla: The Art of Unexpected Embroidery.

Hoopla is the newest offering from Leanne Prain, super cool Vancouverite and co-author of Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crochet and Knit Graffiti. When Leanne stopped by the shop with a copy of the book, we couldn’t have been more impressed. The book beautifully explores and profiles 28 artists that rebel against traditional embroidery designs of flowers and little birds. Instead, Hoopla focuses on the unusual work that is embroidery with a new, guerrilla-style. I think Leanne put it perfectly when she wrote, “it demonstrates that modern embroidery artists are as sharp as the needles with which they work”.

Thursday night, we will be hosting Leanne and her lovely new book. To celebrate we’ll have a few treats on hand and Leanne will speak a few minutes about the book. Hoopla includes embroidery artists from near and far, but to top Thursday night off, we will have a few of the Vancouver artists on hand as well as their work. Plus, Spool of Thread will have plenty of copies of the Hoopla book, so you can head home with your own copy!

Join us on Thursday, September 22nd from 7:00 – 9:00pm.

Everyone here at Spool of Thread is so excited over our newest quilting project, the Ready! Set! Quilt!. When Nicole, one of our instructors, brought the finished quilt by the shop, we couldn’t have been more pleased. The quilt has found its home on our retro chair, and ever since has been touched and picked up by sewers of all levels.

Ready! Set! Quilt! class covers Quilting 101 knowledge from good tips for using a rotary cutter, putting together the quilt top and even quilting the project together using a walking foot. Plus, the best part of the class is hanging out at Spool of Thread with the other students, and sewing. We love the days our quilting classes run, as the shop feels like a day camp for sewers. People sit, drink their tea, chat and stitch away on their new quilts.

For the sample, we picked a gradient color range for the quilt, but we think it would look equally darling using rows of prints, using different prints with all the same colors or anything you can imagine!

For more information visit the Ready! Set! Quilt! class description page.

Ready! Set! Quilt!

Sundays, September 18th, 25th and October 2nd.

11:00am – 3:00pm. $199

Note: A small amount of homework may be required. We scheduled the class first thing in the morning so that students will have time later in the afternoon if they need it to complete the day’s tasks.
