This quick and easy dress combines a flattering V-seamed bodice with side panels cut on the bias, letting you play with patterns such as stripes and plaids. The simple dirndl style skirt has in-seam pockets. Version 2 gives cutting layouts for using border print fabrics.

These simple and cute shorts are so quick to sew, you could make them in every color. Pockets are set into a front side seam and optionally close with buttons. The shorts sport a 4 1/2 inch inseam length and close with an invisible side zipper. Pictured here with the Colette Violet blouse.

Princess seam sundress with a curve skimming fit. The neckline and pockets are adorned with a flap detail that can be made in self fabric (version 1) or contrasting fabric (version 2). The skirt is slightly tapered for a slim fit, and includes a back kickpleat for ease of movement. The back closes with an invisible zipper.

Our bright + cheery May Flower Pin has been warming my heart ever since I sewed it. This spring feels like it has been full of rain, and at the shop we’ve been telling ourselves, “April showers bring May flowers”. What could be a finer way than welcoming the upcoming sunshine than a bright, sunny, handmade flower. Pin it to your jacket or bag, make a hair pin or give it to your Mom for Mother’s Day. Either way, our May flower pin is certain to brighten your day.

We wanted to give you a heads up, as our super awesome quilt instructor Nicole has some big plans for this summer, and as a warning, this will be the last weekend Ready! Set! Quilt! for a few months. We’re planning the next date for early Fall. So, if you were planning ahead on making the quilt as a treat for yourself or perhaps have a summer baby on the way, the April session is your best bet!

Bags: the Modern Classics: Clutches, Hobos, Satchels & More caught my attention right away, as a trained eye might notice, the cover features a bag made out of a Spool of Thread favourite, an Echino linen cotton blend.

I’m planning ahead, and I’m hoping to squeeze a little bag making from the Bags book this weekend.  The biggest problem of course, is which bag to make first?

I decided that this was going to be the one; I even had my fabric picked out. I especially love the version on the upper right, with the contrast pipping.

I was all ready to go, until I saw this cute little guy:

It seems perfect for my summer plans. A great size to stash a bit of money – to keep my hands free for holding ice cream cones on the beach or fresh produce at the farmer’s market.

We are currently seeking to fill two unique positions. First, we are excited to add an enthusiastic and detail oriented Part-time Retail person to our team. We seek a staff member with previous retail experience, that is excited to help customers find the perfect fabric for their project, and assist in daily tasks in our busy retail shop.

Second, Spool of Thread seeks to add a Sewing Class Instructor to our team. Our sewing instructors are passionate about sewing and sharing their knowledge with Spool of Thread sewing class students. Instructors are also extremely outgoing and friendly, and are able to quickly troubleshoot sewing problems and think on their feet.

In case you missed it, the super amazing Janis from Pinecone Camp created the above Cracker DIY for another super amazing Vancouverite, Jan at Poppytalk. The fabric is from Spool of Thread and Janis picked some great ones. I love her idea of making napkins and using them to wrap the crackers! You can find the full DIY instructions on Poppytalk.

We wanted to make these for our Christmas celebration but we ran out of time. Instead, I think they will be perfect for New Years Eve!

This is one of our favourite times of the year at Spool of Thread. With all of the hustle, bustle and needing of that last bit of fabric to finish a project, we decided to extend our hours starting this Saturday, December 10th, to make all of this Holiday sewing, gift making and buying easier on you.

We’re not just extending our hours, we’re also very excited to announce that between now + Christmas we will be open 7 days a week! We are now open on Mondays and super late during the week! Till 9:30pm!

We even bring pins so that you can place your bow on your sweater or jacket as soon as it finished! The best part of the day is watching everyone match their favourite printed cotton to felt, each colour combination tested with each person coming up with their own spin on the project.

The Bow would also be darling turned into a holiday ornament or tied to a special package, or as Andrea from Got Craft? suggested, add a bobby pin and turn the bow into a holiday hair fascinator.
