A-line Skirt

26 Aug

I love a good skirt. They are easy to wear, and in the retro fabrics at Spool of Thread, a skirt can really make your outfit special.

In our A-line Skirt class we use one of my favourite sewing patterns, Amy Butler’s Barcelona Skirt. I finished a new skirt for myself last night out of Momo Freebird fabric (also one of my favourites!). I thought you’d like to see.

A-line Skirt at Spool of Thread

We have another session of the A-line skirt class coming up Thursdays, September 2nd + 9th from 6:30 – 9:30pm. In the class, you’ll learn how to insert an invisible zipper, measure your size, work with a commercial sewing pattern and use 2 different hemming techniques. Plus, you’ll head home with a finished skirt and the pattern. After taking the class, its easy to make the skirt again and again. Changing the fabric, length or embellishing the skirt makes it unique every time!

Next, I plan on making a solid colour skirt out of a Kona Cotton, and hemming the lining a bit longer to peek out below the skirt. Add tights and it will be prefect for the fall.

New from Heather Ross

17 Jul

I am so very excited to have Heather Ross’ latest collection, Far Far Away II, in the shop! We are one of a few Canadian stores to carry it!

FFA1

Far Far Away II is the second chapter of Heather Ross’ fairy tale fabric. In this collection, instead of unicorns and the Princess and the Pea, we are treated to Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty and my favorite, The Owl and the Pussycat. We also have the beautiful roses and handsome moon print in stock.

FFA4

As you can see from the photos, the designs are printed on a a heavier “bottom weight” cotton linen blend.  It works great for bags, clothing and home decor items. It also looks lovely in a quilt.

There are quite a few amazing craft events happening around Vancouver this weekend, but we  are most excited about Got Craft? on Sunday!

Why, you ask? We are hosting a Do-It-Yourself table with a free project for visitors to the show! Henry and I will be up on the stage with all the supplies and instruction needed for you to make your own springy Pinwheel Pin!

I made the first Pinwheel a few weeks back when I was wishing for brighter, sunshine-filled days. Now that spring is here, we will have a variety of colors and a number of fabrics straight from bolts on the Spool of Thread shelves.

Plus, there are over 55 vendors selling at Got Craft?! It is a great chance to shop and meet some of the best of Vancouver’s makers.

When you’re at the show on Sunday, be sure to stop by Spool of Thread (up on the stage!) and say hello!
